Motorists warned of alleged fraudster
Highway residents are urged to be aware of a man who is allegedly taking money from motorists after claiming his car has run out of petrol.

A MAN, driving a white Uno, has been spotted at the major fly-offs around the Highway area asking motorists for money to purchase petrol. Local residents have been urged not to fall pray to this possible scam.
According to Annemarie Joubert, on her first encounter with the man, there was an elderly woman in the back of the vehicle so she decided to help him.
“I am a sucker when it comes to old people. I felt very sorry for her. He took my card, which had all of my details on it, and promised to contact me and pay me back the R200 I lent him that day,” said Joubert.
She said four weeks passed and she still had not heard from the man. “It was only until I saw him doing the same thing again did I realise what was going on and what sort of character he is,” said Joubert.
Another Highway resident, Kathy Couper, said her son had once lent the man R100. “I just can’t believe that there is someone out there doing this. Either he runs out of petrol a lot or he is making easy prey out of kindhearted motorists,” said Couper.
Couper and Joubert both described the man as tall and skinny, with highlighted hair. He wears an earring on his left ear and is in his early 40s. They noted he is usually found at the offramp at the St John’s Bridge or in Blair Atholl in Westville.
