Godwin takes on first Comrades

Pinetown resident shares his first experience at running the Comrades Marathon.

PINETOWN resident, Godwin Musamirapamwe (44), will be attempting to complete his first Comrades Marathon on Sunday 1 June.

Last year, Godwin made his first endeavour to run the world’s oldest and largest ultra marathon, but soon realised that the 90km route was not for the faint hearted.

“I use to watch the runners along the road with my children. It looked easy and decided to try it. I thought it would be easy and I did not realise how tough it was going to be,” said Godwin.

He reported that he did not eat before the race and also did not hydrate properly during the race. Soon he began to shiver and his legs began to give in, and he was forced to abandon his goal.

The brave athlete has since not given up on his dream to complete the Comrades Marathon. He remains optimistic, but realistic about his goal.

“Now I realise my mistakes. It is not just about running. You need to have the right information and you need to use your mind strategically. You also need to prepare properly,” said Godwin.

In preparation for this year’s Comrades Godwin had been collecting the relevant information and educating himself on issues pertaining to the marathon, he increased his training, has joined the Pinetown and Districts Athletics Club, and has been racing in the KZNA league races.

“I run and train mostly on the weekends, because of my work. I try and run about 18km on Saturdays and 20km on Sundays. When I have the time on weekdays, I try and run about 6km in the mornings,” said Godwin.

In approximately two weeks Godwin’s hard work will be put to the test and he is hopeful that he will accomplish his goal.
