Toe-tapping group claims gold
Even though they will not be competing in the World Championship of Performing Arts in Los Angeles in June, the group of dancers is adamant to succeed in the dancing world.
KLOOF High School’s dance team, Breakin’ Pointe, travelled to Rustenburg to compete at the national round of the South African Championship of Performing Arts.
They were able to take part in the competition thanks to a generous donation from Illovo as well as other fundraising efforts.
The team consisted of Nicola Fryer, Sam Zoepke, Robyn Venter, Kelsey St Clair and Amy Wurzel. The girls did the province proud as they won two gold medals in the lyrical and open categories as well as two silver medals for jazz and musical theatre. Mandisa Mbeje, also from Kloof High School, received a gold medal for her solo tap dance.
As Breakin’ Pointe is run solely by the pupils, from the choreography and teaching to the music editing and costumes, it was an incredible achievement.
All six dancers were also selected through an audition process to join the Beyond 2000 team. Part of the criteria for selection is the ability to dance different styles and the ability to learn dances quickly. The team had two nights to learn a specially choreographed dance, which incorporated a number of different styles, from jazz, hip hop and tutting to Broadway, African contemporary, pop, rock and freestyle.
The dance was the opening act of the showcase, the highlight of the week where specially selected items from the competition were performed in front of a large, appreciative audience.
Having qualified for Team South Africa, the six dancers were invited to compete in the World Championship of Performing Arts in Los Angeles in June this year. Unfortunately Breakin’ Pointe will not be representing South Africa this year as the costs are too high.
