Commuter killed in Westmead shooting

An uncle watched in horror as his nephew was shot and killed in Westmead.

A SEEMINGLY ordinary commute to work ended in tragedy, when a 30-year-old man was shot and killed on Surprise Road in Westmead this morning.

It was alleged that the deceased and his uncle travelled from Shongweni in a taxi with a third unknown man.

“The three men were walking along Surprise Road, towards Alibizia Road, when the third man suddenly produced a gun and shot the deceased,” said Lt Bongumusa Manqele, the Pinetown SAPS communications officer.

He was shot several times in the stomach and chest.

The uncle allegedly attempted to grab the gun from the shooter and a struggle ensued, which caused the shooter to drop the gun. He then fled the scene.

According to the uncle the third man did not demand any money.
