A YOUNG mastermind, Mthobisi Xulu, of Wyebank Secondary School won the Micro Steam Car Challenge at the 30th FFS Expo for Young Scientists, held at the Edgewood campus of UKZN on Friday 1 August.
The Grade 10 pupil, scooped the top spot after he managed to make his tin car travel 1 045 metres on 20ml of methanol. He attributed his success to the determination, motivation and hard work of his teachers. The Wyebank pupils dominated the challenge, as Jaffar Dlamini, a fellow Grade 10 pupil, nabbed second place in the competition. He ran his car for 1010 metres.
Approximately 250 high-school pupils from KwaZulu-Natal participated in more than 180 projects at this year’s FFS Expo for Young Scientists.
Prof Bice Martincigh, the main organiser of the event, said, “I was impressed with the quality of the projects this year. We awarded more prizes this year than in previous years, which proves the higher quality.”
