US and SA tie in first test of BMW Polo Series

The crowds were treated to a highly competitive, skilled match.

It was an exciting, fast paced match between SA and the US in the first test of the BMW Polo Series held at the Durban Shongweni Club on Sunday.

This is the sixth time the US team have played in the Series which is now in its 25th year partnership between BMW South Africa and the SA Polo Association.

A minute of silence was held before the match in remembrance of Carlos Gracida,who was due to play in the Series alongside his brother, Memo Gracida. Carlos was tragically killed in a polo accident on 25 February at Everglades Polo Club in Florida. Carlos was one of the most accomplished players in the history of polo.

The fiercely competitive and experienced US team pulled out all the stops as they put SA under pressure to match their skills, ending the first half 3- 0 to the US.

Not to be outdone, SA came back in the final 3 chukkas to end the match 5-5, with a heart stopping last minute goal by SA’s, Davey Evans.

The most valuable player title was awarded to Memo Gracida from team USA.

The second test match will take place on Sunday, 14 September at the Waterfall Polo Estate in Sunninghill, Johannesburg.
