Sue steps down after years’ of service
After more than 12 years' service to Hillcrest Conservancy, Sue Schönefeld is stepping down as treasurer.
NEARLY 16 years after joining the Hillcrest Conservancy as a committee member and countless years at the helm of the conservancy’s treasury, Sue Schönefeld is stepping down as treasurer.
Sue, who became treasurer of Hillcrest Conservancy in 2002, joined the conservancy when Springside Nature Reserve and Hillcrest Conservancy were still separate entities.
Between 2004 and 2005 the reserve and conservancy joined forces to form what is known today as only the Hillcrest Conservancy.
For Sue, there were many events that stood out in her mind. Among them were the Wild Flower Festival, potjiekos evenings, bird watching and many other events.
Every second Wednesday, without fail, Sue is at Springside Nature Reserve to ensure those who attend the guided walk have tea, coffee and snacks after the walk.
When asked what the conservancy’s biggest challenge is, Sue said: “It’s always a struggle to get members for the committee and also people to join in the guided walks. Finding willing volunteers these days is a struggle,” she said.
Although she is stepping down as treasurer, Sue said she will still be involved in the committee.
“I’ll still be arranging the guided walks. Thank you to everyone on the committee, from the past and the present. I couldn’t do a good job in isolation. It’s thanks to everybody’s hard work that we are where we are today. Also, thanks to Beryl Draper, who stood on the committee alongside me for years. We had a very close working relationship before she and her husband, Pat, moved to Howick,” Sue said.
How to get involved
IF you would like to get involved in Hillcrest Conservancy and Springside Nature Reserve, join the conservancy for its monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of each month at noon.
The reserve is also open from 7.30am to 4pm everyday for residents to enjoy.
