Fallen heroes remembered at Wayside Cross
The Wayside Cross Ceremony will be held in Pinetown, on the Pinetown Library grounds, on Sunday 2 November 2014 at 2pm.
FORMER national serviceman, the late Greg Scott, will be remembered.
His name has been added to the memorial slab of the Wayside Cross and will be unveiled at the parade in the Pinetown Library grounds on Sunday 2 November at 2pm.
The ceremony is hosted by the MOTHs (Memorable Order of Tin Hats) of the Better Ole Shellhole. The parade has taken place annually since 1927, the aim of which is to recognise and honour all of the services that serve their communities in South Africa today. Between 30 and 40 wreaths are laid each year.
According to Major Matthew Everitt, chairman of the Wayside Cross committee/19 Field Engineers Regiment, Greg Scott was killed in action on 27 June 1988 in Angola when four-Cuban piloted MiG-23s each dropped two parachute-retarded bombs on the Calueque Dam. Twelve South African soldiers, including Greg, were killed that day.
The Wayside Cross ceremony honours all South African soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
After World War 1, a sandstone memorial was erected and maintained by the Pinetown community. After World War II more names were added. There is a slab that commemorates Pinetown boys killed in the so-called Border War of the 1970s and 1980s.
The national, provincial, Metro, veterans organisations and other formations have been invited to attend the ceremony. All interested persons are also invited and welcome to attend the parade.
