Armed robber sentenced to 28 years

Sthembiso Nkwanyana fired two shots at a group of construction workers last year before he made off with all of their construction tools.

THIRTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Sthembiso Nkwanyana was convicted and sentenced to 28 years of imprisonment at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court for attempted murder and armed robbery, last Thursday.

According to Captain Thulani Zwane, regional spokesman for the SAPS, the man robbed construction workers at about 10.30am on 18 November, 2013.

The construction workers were on duty along Nipper Road in New Germany when they were approached by four robbers, one of whom was armed with a gun. “The armed robber cocked the gun pointed it at the workers and fired two shots, but no one was injured. “Construction tools to the value of R35 000 were taken and the one robber fled the scene on foot,” said Zwane.

Police responded to the complaint and found the man hiding near a river in Clermont. “A 9mm pistol and four rounds of ammunition were found in his possession and he was also charged for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition,” said Zwane. He noted that all of the tools that were taken during the robbery were recovered. Nkwanyana later appeared in court and was denied bail and after several appearances in court he was convicted.
