Update: Remaining donkey at Kloof SPCA
The remaining donkey has been taken to the Kloof & Highway SPCA.
A meeting was held on Monday, 3 November between the Kloof and Highway SPCA, Coastal Horse Care Unit and the owners of the six donkeys who were killed in a horrific accident on the evening of Saturday, 1 November just before 9pm on the M13 near the Kassier Road offramp.
The meeting was to address the issues of the animals escaping from the property and the care of the remaining animals. The owners agreed to sign over eight horses and the remaining donkey to CHCU and the Kloof and Highway SPCA.
Barbara Patrick, Kloof and Highway SPCA manager said, “This difficult situation was made by the owners in the best interest of the animals concerned as they are unable to provide for all the animals’ welfare needs. The horses that remain on the property will now be able to be cared for in terms of their needs for food, veterinary care etc.”
Gill Olmesdahl, manager of Coastal Horse Care Unit added, “Strict warnings from both societies have been given to the owners of the horses and donkeys and they will be monitored continuously.”
Both organisations would like to thank Metro Police, Wayne Tozer and Bruce Mattison from the Large Animal Pound and community members who came to help at the scene on Saturday night.
“We are extremely sad about this incident which could have been avoided had the donkeys not escaped from their property. It is the owners’ responsibility to ensure that their pets are kept on their property at all times as per the by-laws,” said Patrick.
Unconfirmed reports say that the donkeys were spotted early on Saturday morning but no one contacted the SPCA until after the tragic accident.
Lisa Gadd, PR for the Kloof and Highway SPCA said, “The public is reminded that they can contact the SPCA for any animal related concerns either on the landline or after hours on the emergency number and we will be only too happy to help.”
The remaining donkey and two miniature ponies were taken to the Kloof and Highway SPCA on Tuesday, 4 November.
If anyone is interested in adopting horses or donkeys please contact the Kloof and Highway SPCA on 031 7641212/3 or CHCU on 031 7821434.
