Student protests continue at Westville campus

Classes have been disrupted this morning at Westville campus as students protest.

INCIDENTS of violence have been reported at the UKZN Westiville  campus, as students are allegedly stoning cars and burning tyres in protest, although this has not been confirmed by officials.

Many students who had arrived this morning to attend lectures have been turned back as the situation is highly dangerous, according to twitter reports.

This is the second strike at the campus this month as classes were disrupted  on Tuesday, 10 February, following violent protest action by students. Many students were calling for financial aid to be given out to more students who were not able to register this year.

Westville SAPS communications officer, Stephen Clark, has confirmed the strike at Westville campus but could not comment on the reports of violence at this stage.

Update to follow.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
