Reports of resurgence of violence are false, say officials
In a media statement released on Tuesday afternoon, the KwaZulu-Natal Police said no new incidents of violence had been reported in the last 48 hours.
THE KwaZulu-Natal Government and eThekwini Metro has urged all residents to refrain from circulating unverified information following reports that violent attacks against foreign nationals re-erupted in Isipingo, south of Durban today, 21 April 2015.
In a media statement released on Tuesday afternoon, the KwaZulu-Natal Police said no new incidents of violence had been reported in the last 48 hours.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, thanked the communities for heeding the call of their leaders to halt the assault on foreign nationals.
She also expressed her thanks and appreciation to all law enforcement officials who worked in partnership with members of the SAPS to restore law and order in the province.
“Contact the SAPS as soon as you become aware of anyone planning on carrying out any attacks on foreigners. I have directed that the police deployments continue until we are satisfied that the situation is well and truly back to normal,” said Ngobeni.
Chairperson of the joint KwaZulu-Natal Government and eThekwini Metro task team charged with addressing issues around the reintegration, MEC Willies Mchunu, has called on everyone to be responsible and to stop circulating false information on social media.
Recent media reports suggesting that attacks on foreign nationals have re-erupted in Isipingo have not been confirmed.
Mchunu said no incidents of violence were reported in the Durban North areas of Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu, Lindelani, Sydenham and Greenwood Park.
Department of Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini visited Phoenix on Monday night, 20 April and urged officials to profile children, pregnant women and those living with disabilities and provide them with the necessary assistance.
Dlamini’s office will continue to work with the task team to speed up the process of re-integration.
More prayer meetings continue across the province. On Monday night, t congregants held a prayer service at the KwaMashu Christian Centre and committed themselves to working with the Ward Councillor and local safety structures to bring about peaceful reintegration.
