TWENTY boys from Imbaliyezwe Primary School were recently spoilt with the first ever ‘champions of the season’ soccer event, hosted by Varsity College Westville.
The event was held by students and staff as part of Varsity College’s commitment to prioritising its social responsibility to build relationships with various NGOs to provide the ultimate experience and benefits for the various communities and the underprivileged.
According to Zanele Ntombela, student relations manager at Varsity College, the boys enjoyed a breakfast pack before playing an exciting game of soccer. Energy and big smiles came about when the children were separated into groups and they created war cries for the match. The soccer game built up their confidence and self-esteem and encouraged teamwork.
“It was an excellent event, developed and implemented by the VC Cares team on campus, and the boys had the time of their lives,” added Ntombela.
The boys later celebrated at a prize-giving where they all received medals and goodie bags with various snacks, stationery and toys which were handed to them by celebrity, Damian Van Rensburg from the South African National Beach Soccer Team.
Photos were taken of the boys individually with Damian and put in small photo frames so they would remember the sense of pride they felt forever. The boys were treated to lunch after the match and also took home a banner with the hand prints of all the boys, Varsity College VC Cares students, the staff and Damian to take back to school.
