Londeka hopes to inspire young people

Pinetown resident, Londeka Mahlanza is a regional semi-finalist for Miss Earth South Africa.

FORMER Pinetown Girls’ High School pupil, Londeka Mahlanza, is the regional semi-finalist for Miss Earth South Africa.

The Miss Earth South Africa pageant is a programme that aims to empower young South African women with the knowledge and platform to create a sustainable difference in the plight to combat the destruction of the natural heritage.

A KwaNdengezi resident, Londeka said the Miss Earth SA programme is particularly important and relevant to her as it brings together two spheres that she is passionate about – people and the environment.

“My interest in the environmental sector was sparked by my matric geography teacher at Pinetown Girls’, whose passion for the subject raised an environmental consciousness in me that I hope to invoke in others throughout my run for this title.

“I want to raise awareness about the programme itself, my personal green projects and my contribution to the sector that have been taking place socially and in the academic sphere,” she said.

Londeka is currently a first year Masters student at the University of Cape Town, conducting research in the area of water governance.

She has a BA in geography which she obtained from the University of Johannesburg in 2013.

In 2014 she received her BSocSc (Honours) in environmental geographical sciences at the University of Cape Town.

Londeka said she wishes to inspire young people from Pinetown and surroundings to pursue their dreams.

“In July I will be attending an environmental studies summer school in Germany, which is an opportunity I never thought could be possible for me.”
