Kloof resident walks for a worthy cause

John Atkinson has used his passion for healthy living and animals to raise funds for a local organisation.

DRIVEN by his passion for animals and living a healthy lifestyle, Kloof resident, John Atkinson, recently participated in East Coast Radio’s Big Walk and raised R7000 for the Dr Mike Hardwich Foundation.

Speaking about the reasons behind this noble act, Atkinson said, “I have known about the Dr Mike Hardwich Foundation for a while as my girlfriend, Melissa Schreiber, has been actively involved in the organisation. Knowing that the amount of dogs that are helped by the foundation is literally dependent on the amount of money raised, I wanted to help in my own way. I love the outdoors and am passionate about living an active, healthy lifestyle. Therefore, I thought that the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk would be the perfect opportunity to raise money while doing what I enjoy.

“Often we donate money to organisations without hearing another word from them. This is where I think sponsoring the Dr Mike Hardwich Foundation is most rewarding. Every person that donates receives detailed documentation and a photograph of every pet that was able to be sterilised and treated on their behalf, along with a certificate of thanks. When I raise funds for this foundation, I know exactly where my money is going.”

Atkinson’s next challenge will be the Jeep Warrior Race in Ballito on 18 July. He hopes to gain more recognition and sponsors for the Dr Mike Hardwich Foundation as he takes on 16km with 30 obstacles.
