Reach for a Dream sports donation

Debbie Cameron Physiotherapy and St Marys support Reach for a Dream.

The Reach for a Dream Foundation received a R3 200 donation thanks to the 2015 St Mary’s DSG sports tour and Debbie Cameron Physiotherapy.

Debbie Cameron, whose daughter Sarah took part in the St Mary’s sports tour, motivated for Reach for a Dream to be the chosen charity because she has first-hand experience of the amazing work they do for children with life-threatening illnesses. Sarah was diagnosed with leukaemia when she was eleven.

Sarah spent almost a full year in hospital and was successfully treated with chemotherapy. The Reach for a Dream Foundation provided hope and encouragement during this very trying time.

“By God’s grace, the support of the community and through her own hard work, Sarah has made a full recovery,” said Debbie.

One of the goals Sarah set for herself was to make the St Mary’s DGS international hockey touring team. As a result of her illness, she had lost strength and fitness and scar tissue had formed around her spine from intrathecal chemotherapy. The ambition to make a touring team motivated Sarah to work hard on her physical condition and her selection was symbolic for Sarah of her return to full health.

“A teddy bear was kindly given to her by her class teacher to celebrate the day that she took her last chemotherapy tablet,” said Debbie.

The sports tour to Singapore and Malaysia involved thirty hockey, netball and tennis players from Grades 10, 11 and 12 at St Mary’s DSG. The tour takes place every four years and is a fantastic opportunity and experience for everyone participating.

R1 000 was donated by the St Mary’s fundraising committee and R2 200 was donated by Debbie Cameron Physiotherapy staff and clients.
