150 hikers honour Jade’s memory
An amount of R15 000 was raised for The Sunflower Fund during the annual hike organised in memory of little Jade Preston, who died from leukaemia.
ONE-hundred-and-fifty enthusiastic Jade Sky Hikers gathered at the base of Sani Pass on Sunday, 14 June at 7.30am.
The annual hike is organised in memory of little Jade Preston, who died from leukaemia. The Sunflower Fund was instrumental in supporting the Preston family during this time, and all funds raised on the day were donated to the great cause, raising much-needed awareness for those suffering like Jade did.
Hikers chose to challenge themselves by hiking up the pass while celebrating life, remembering those who were challenged by cancer, and supporting those challenged with cancer at present.
The weather was glorious sunshine with patches of snow and ice. Old and young enthusiasts braved the 8km pass in fine style. The Midlands 4×4 Club offered a superb service with breakfast rolls to energise the soul at the start, and seconded hikers all the way to the top of Sani Pass and back again until the last hiker was safely back from the challenging 16km round trip.
An amount of R15 000 was raised for The Sunflower Fund, which will go a long way to grow the South African Bone Marrow Registry by actively educating and recruiting more committed bone marrow stem cell donors. This gives hope to patients and families facing leukaemia and other life-threatening blood disorders, as the more donors there are on the registry, the more hope patients have of finding their one in 100 000 life-saving donor match.
