Scrap metal thieves caught red-handed

Malvern SAPS caught and arrested thieves in action.

THREE thieves were caught red-handed trying steal a Malvern resident’s gate using a gas-powered high-tech tool last week. W/O Prasham Raghunandhan was at the community service centre at SAPS Malvern when he was alerted of the theft in progress, according to corporate communications officer at SAPS Malvern, W/O Radhika Marimuthu.

He was alerted by the owners of the building at a building site next to the police station, who said that they had observed the scrap metal dealers at their site prior to reporting it. The suspects picked the gate up and were in the process of stripping it when they were caught.

They were arrested and charged with theft. Residents are cautioned to keep tools and machinery locked in the garage or far from visibility. The method of operation of these opportunist criminals is to observe, ‘suss out’ the property and wait for the right time to strike. Two men were arrested for theft and the third for unlicensed driving.
