Wyebank school embarks on building project

Wyebank Secondary School has many fundraising events planned and is appealing to the community to support these ventures.

WYEBANK Secondary School is currently building a much-needed school hall and is appealing to the community to support this project.

The high school caters for more than 1 200 pupils, mainly from disadvantaged communities, and despite the many challenges the school faces, they constantly strive to provide all pupils with a high quality education.

The school principal, Dr Saths Govender, said the one factor that constrains them is the absence of a school hall. The school was built for 880 pupils but currently caters for 1 250 on average. The school hall will provide more space for the extra pupils.

“All stakeholders agreed that the construction of a school hall will greatly facilitate the undertaking of a range of activities, such as assemblies, school plays, indoor sport, examinations, awards functions, et cetera. The hall will also be made available for use by the local community,” said Govender.

Durban Steel and Building has made an excellent proposal for the construction of a cost-effective school hall. With the savings that the school had made over the years, they have managed to pay R500 000, which has allowed the construction of building to commence. However, the school still needs R750 000 to successfully complete the project.

Dr Jordi Iyman, chairman of the school governing body, said above the required funds needed to complete the building, the school also requires a sponsor for electrical and plumbing services.

“We are hoping to have the school hall ready by the end of the year, specifically to hold our first matric examinations in the new hall,” said Iyman.

Dr Govender said the school has many fundraising events planned and is appealing to the community to support these ventures, and is also appealing to former pupils, sponsors and the community to assist them wherever possible.
