Supermarket warns against ‘Wheel of Fortune’ scam

Residents have been warned to avoid entering the 'Wheel of Fortune' scam competition.

PICK n Pay has urged residents to be aware of the ‘Wheel of Fortune’ scam and to refrain from entering the competition. The store issued a warning on their Facebook page, which read, “This is a scam that has been doing the rounds for a few days now! Pick n Pay does not run competitions unless they are on our social media pages. We would never ask you to give us banking details or to pay to enter a competition via SMS or give out bank details.”

Details of the competition, which entices users with a R8 000 voucher as the prize, went viral on WhatsApp recently. Once the link is opened, users are given the opportunity to spin the ‘Wheel of Fortune’. A tab then pops up and states that the users has won another spin. When the user spins the wheel for the second time, he/she is told they are one step away from winning the possible prize and is then requested to send the message to 10 people via WhatsApp.

Once the message is sent, users are requested to click next to claim their prize, but this leads to the user being requested to register for a shopping cart.

Pick n Pay has distanced itself from this scam.
