THE Mariannhill SAPS Youth Desk was sponsored uniforms by Projecoon, a housing development company in Westville. The uniforms, which cost more than R16 000, consisted of a golf T-shirts and tracksuits.
Mariannhill SAPS station commander, Col Themba Madonsela, expressed his gratitude for the donation. “The youngsters will now look professional and dignified when they are conducting their work.
“The aim of the Youth Desk is to assist other young people who have fallen into criminal activities and drugs. It is a known fact that most of the crime is committed by young people.
Madonsela said the members of the Youth Desk come up with a crime awareness campaign among the youth.
“They also assist with arts and skills development. There are many young talented people who end up in jail as there are no platforms to showcase their talents. The more they are occupied, there are more chances that crime will decrease,” he said.
Projecoon director, Derrick Gumede, said he was very impressed that young people have committed themselves to work with the police.
“I believe that our country will be a better place if the youth knows more about the law and have good relationships with the police. Young people are always used to create disturbances in communities and for criminal activities.
“I saw this as a perfect opportunity to give back so that they will also be proud of what they are doing in the community and be respected. I hope more young people can look up to them and join them on this good venture,” said Gumede.
