Man sentenced for killing wife

The charge was changed from murder to culpable homicide.

THE Pietermaritzburg Regional Court convicted and sentenced Narain Singh (62) to seven years’ imprisonment for culpable homicide.

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Lt Bomgumusa Manqele, said on 3 May 2013, the victim (59) was on her way home in Cliffdale when she met the accused, who was her husband.

“It is alleged that the two had an argument and Singh, who was under influence of alcohol, pulled out an iron rod and started to assault his wife all over the body. The victim was taken to hospital, where she died of her injuries,” he said.

A case of murder was opened at Hammarsdale SAPS for further investigation.

Manqele said the accused made several appearances in court and a charge of murder was changed to culpable homicide. Diligent work by the investigating officer was commended.
