U11 20/20 cricket tournament gets underway this weekend

Expect top class cricket from some talented U11 teams.

THE U11 20/20 cricket tournament, sponsored by Sunfoil, gets underway from Friday, 2 October to Sunday, 4 October at Kearsney College and Highbury and will showcase some of KZN’s top U11 players.

Now in its eighth year, it attracts top primary schools in Durban and Pietermaritzburg with two sponsored sides from the KZNCU. Teams competing are the Highbury Hurricanes, Kloof Cobras, HCA Curro Pinch Hitters, Hillcrest Hotshots, Glenwood Hoppers, Winston Park Warriors, Northlanders, Chelsea Lions, Clifton Dragons, Winston Park Pythons and Umhlali Dolphins. The two KZNCU sides are the Umgeni Mambas and the Sunfoil Tigers, with Pelham Panthers and St Charles Strikers from Pietermaritzburg.

There are two pools of eight teams with each side playing seven matches over the three days. As well as the two pool winners, there are three prizes for best batsman/bowler and all-rounder, presented at the end of play on Sunday.

Game 1 will take place from 8.30 to 9.50am and 9.55am to 11.15am and Game 2 11.30am to 12.30am and 1.30pm to 2.50pm.

The tournament is the brainchild of Phil Ratcliffe, who was very involved in KZN Cricket and SA Schools’ Cricket and is run by himself and Mike Griffiths, who are both ex-Kearsney staff.

The Kearsney Coffee Shop will be open, catering for everyone’s tastes and serving light lunches.

“We are extremely grateful to our new sponsor, Sunfoil, which have taken up support of this tournament, supplying the players with their brightly-coloured shirts and caps and many other prizes,” said Ratcliffe.
