Home Affairs official arrested for fraud

The official has been working at the department for more than 10 years.

A HOME Affairs official was arrested on Wednesday, 18 November at the Pinetown branch.

The 32-year-old female, who was a cashier at the department, was arrested for fraud.

She appeared in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 19 November where she was granted bail and her case was postponed to 26 January next year.

The investigating officer, who can’t be named due to the nature of his job, said the official could be facing more charges as the investigation continues, and there are suspicions that she had made attempts to steal money before.

The official has been working at the department for more than 10 years.

Through audits, it was revealed that the Pinetown branch didn’t bank a sufficient amount in October and over R100 000 was unaccounted for.

“The department had strengthened its auditing process as part of the operation to eradicate corruption and criminal activity within the department,” said Tersia Hanekom from Home Affairs.
