eThekwini installs water restrictive discs

Highway Mail readers are urged to share their experiences with the new copper disc restrictors.

COWIES Hill resident, Roy McGeean, is furious following a copper ring (orifice) that was installed onto his water meter to decrease the water consumption.

eThekwini Water and Sanitation issued notices to residents informing them that due to the ongoing drought in the province, they were going to ration the supply of portable water in all areas. In order to stabilise the water supply, they decided to install restrictors on all properties.

The notice read: “These interventions will help stabilise the water supply system and control the outflow from the reservoirs. Our intention is to supply you with an uninterrupted supply once we have realised the desired savings of 30 to 50 per cent. The philosophy of some water to all, all the time has been adopted.”

Meanwhile, McGeean questioned the situation of taps in the rural areas that are left to run all day.

“No one is charged for those, but I am paying for my usage and it gets decreased? Can someone please explain?” said an angry McGeean.

eThekwini Water and Sanitation apologised for the unavoidable inconvenience caused by the declining dam storage levels but urged residents to continue to use water sparingly.

“With your help, we will be able to conserve and prolong our precious dwindling water reserves during this difficult time. Once the level of the supply dams has returned to a safe level, water will be returned to normal.”
