A 33-YEAR-old man appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 16 May following his arrest last Thursday by the National Security Intelligence Unit and the KwaZulu-Natal Hawks for a business robbery in Pinetown.
He was remanded into police custody and will go back to court on Monday, 23 May for a bail application.
According to Lt Nqobile Gwala, spokesman for the KZN Provincial SAPS, the man was arrested in the Nazareth area after police received intelligence-driven information about his whereabouts.
She said a security guard was collecting two bags of money from a company in Wareing Road in Pinetown on Tuesday, 3 May at approximately 6.30pm when he was accosted by two unknown men at gunpoint.
“The robbers allegedly fired shots at the security guard before fleeing the scene with two bags containing an undisclosed amount of cash. The service pistol belonging to the security guard was also stolen by the robbers, who fled the scene in a white Toyota Corolla,” said Gwala.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the members for the swift arrest of the suspect. “With the help of our communities who continue to partner with us in the battle against crime, we remain confident of imminent arrests,” she said.
