Scouts honoured with Comrades service award
The 1st Hillcrest Scouts have marshaled the Comrades Marathon every year for the past 25 years.
THE 1st Hillcrest Scout Group was represented with a double green number in recognition of the 25 consecutive years of voluntary marshalling for the Comrades Marathon recently.
“Events like ours simply could not happen without great volunteers. They are the ones who work long hours to give the Comrades runners a positive experience,” said Cheryl Winn, vice chairman for the Comrades Marathon Association.
1st Hillcrest Scout Group is the second longest group of volunteer Comrades Marathon marshals to the eThekwini Rotary who has been doing so for 34 years.
“We have a tremendous camaraderie, we love the Comrades event, and we all work together to keep improving it. We always aim for perfection. We’ll keep at it until we get there,” said Anthea Rawlins who has been largely responsible for organising the 1st Hillcrest Scout marshals and all the logistics on the day for 11 years.
“This is a special moment to celebrate and we acknowledge a two decade-long contribution of such dedicated volunteers to the Comrades Marathon by 1st Hillcrest Scouts,” said Brad Sparks, chairman of 1st Hillcrest Scouts, on receiving the number of behalf of the group.
