City to roll-out free WiFi

Nxumalo said the city has rolled out over 1 500 kilometres of fibre optic cables.

ETHEKWINI Municipality will soon be rolling out free WiFi in different public access hotspots, targeting rural areas, townships and areas near universities. This was announced by Mayor James Nxumalo recently when he delivered the city’s R41.6-billion budget for the 2016/17 financial year.

The project will be rolled out in different phases, beginning with the pilot phase. This phase includes the laying of fibre optic cabling. About R30-million has been set aside for the project in the next financial year. The data limit will begin at 250MB a day per device in the pilot phase.

Nxumalo said the city has rolled out over 1 500 kilometres of fibre optic cables. “This has enabled the city to connect all public facilities and to provide free WiFi in all municipal libraries. Before the end of June we expect to launch free WiFi in major townships, rural areas and areas around universities or where there is a high concentration of students,” he said. Nxumalo said the city plans to set up 750 WiFi access points within the next three years.
