Restdale residents enjoy treats on Mandela Day
"This is a first for our company on Mandela Day and hopefully it is a first of many."
RESIDENTS at Restdale Nursing Home in Malvern were treated to a tea party on Monday, 18 July. As part of the Mandela Day initiative, various organisations gathered at the home to shower the residents with love and entertainment.
“We take our corporate social responsibility very seriously. This is how the idea of giving the residents a tea party came about. We wanted to do something for old folks on Mandela Day and interact with them and we hope they enjoyed it. Restdale Nursing Home is also close to my heart because my grandmother lived here,” said Shelley Hutton of Top Carpets and Flooring.
While some residents were enjoying the tea party, those who felt brave stepped outside to enjoy some time sitting on Harley Davidson motorbike, courtesy of Moira Visser. “I feel honoured to have been invited and that my contribution today was able to put a smile on the residents’ faces. I love old people, I love riding and I love my motorbike and to be able to combine all three makes me happy,” said Visser.
A group of volunteers from Natal Portland Cements dedicated their time on renewing the garden with water wise plants. The group planted aloes and succulents which are all indigenous. “We wanted to do something sustainable for the home, something that the residents could always enjoy long after we have left. This is a first for our company on Mandela Day and hopefully it is a first of many. We wish we could have done more,” said organisers Samke Mthembu and Phumi Dlamini.
Matron, Ruth Dweyer, thanked the contributors for their selfless act. “It’s people like our contributors who make Mandela Day very special,” she said.
