Police recovered a toy gun and a knife from one of the hijackers.

Police arrested a man (21) for hijacking a taxi in Pinetown on Tuesday, 26 July.

According to Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Cpt Ndumiso Manqele, the victim (24) was driving a Toyota Quantum along Glenugie Road in Pinetown.

“Three armed men jumped inside the taxi when the driver stopped at a traffic sign and ordered the victim to drive to KwaDabeka.

“It is alleged that when they arrived in KwaDabeka, the driver was told to go back to Pinetown.

“On the way to Pinetown, the victim was forced out of the taxi and shots were fired by the hijackers but no one was injured,” said Manqele.

The matter was reported to police and the taxi was fitted with a tracking device.

“The taxi was tracked to KwaDabeka, Sub 5 area. When the men realized that they were being followed by police, they abandoned the vehicle and one man was arrested,” he said.
