Obituary: Pinetown stalwart dies

He will be sorely missed by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

WELL known Pinetown resident for many years, Ian Angus-Leppan died on 27 July 2016, at the age of 92.

Ian Angus-Leppan (fondly known as Angus), was the oldest of four children, with younger siblings, Peter, June and Victor, born to Hilton and Irene Angus-Leppan.

He attended school in Johannesburg at Jeppe Prep and King Edward VII High School (KES). After matriculating in 1941, he joined the South African Airforce and trained at Waterkloof, becoming an instructor and Lieutenant. Angus flew Havards, Tiger Moths and Spitfires for Squadron 40 and was one of the last World War II fighter pilots. He fought in Cairo, Palestine, Italy and Austria. At the end of the war, Angus studied metallurgy at WITS University.

Angus married Coral Wolfaardt and they had three children, Irene, Murray and Patricia. Working as a salesman in Johannesburg and trying his hand at farming in Ixopo, he finally found his niche selling scientific equipment for many years before retiring.

A few years after Coral’s death, Angus married Peggy Scott, a well-known personality in Barclays Bank (First National) in Pinetown. Peggy, a widow, had two grown-up sons, Andrew and Mark. Angus and Peggy moved to Eshowe but finally settled in Hilton. They were married for 16 years before Peggy died.

In time, Angus was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and moved closer to the family (Irene and Patricia) in Kloof. His last few years were spent at Kloof Rest Home and a final few months in a rest home in Ladismith, Karoo close to his son, Murray.

He has been described as a modest, gracious, gentle man with a ready smile and glint in his eye. Before his illness he had a passion for carpentry and a love of the outdoors, often going on hikes with a ramblers group. He was undemanding and uncomplaining despite being disabled in his latter years.

He will be sorely missed by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
