Ruth gets highest of Science awards

Last year she represented South Africa at the International Biology Olympiad in Denmark.

RUTH Purcell, a Grade 12 St Mary’s DSG pupil, has been chosen as SPAR Star of the Month.

She has recently returned from Vietnam where she represented South Africa as one of the four members of the South African Biology Olympiad Team in the International Biology Olympiad.

Ruth placed among the top students from all over the world and achieved an International Merit.

Last year she represented South Africa at the International Biology Olympiad in Denmark.

She was also selected, as SA’s top Grade 11 candidate in last year’s SAASTA Senior National Life Sciences Olympiad, to represent SA at the Australian Youth Science Forum in January this year.

In addition to this, Ruth was the top student in South Africa at this year’s SAASTA Senior National Life Sciences Olympiad (out of about 25 000 entrants) and was invited to attend the National Science Focus week in Pretoria.

At this ceremony, Ruth was selected to represent South Africa at the International Youth Science Forum in London this year. As a result of Ruth’s outstanding achievements she was awarded the highest of Sciences awards at St Mary’s last week with Honours Cum Laude.
