IN an effort to make every drop of water count the Deutsche Schule Durban tasked all of its pupils to take at least two litres of grey water to school each Friday for an entire term.
Each class was then allocated a part of the school’s garden to water. The children were very excited and enjoyed watering the plants. On its first day a total of 369 litres was collected. Grey water is wastewater from households that hasn’t been in contact with human or toxic waste. Water that was used was from baths, showers, bathroom sinks and washing machines. In a month the pupils collected 3520.5litres of grey water.
Hannah Mangenda, the marketer at Deutsche Schule Durban, said the school started the initiative to do its bit to make every drop of water count and to teach the children about this precious resource. “We are also an eco school so we are always on the lookout for possibilities to recycle and to reduce our consumption of water and electricity,” said Hannah.
