Mariannhill families lose everything in fire
Ward 13 councillor appeals for donations to assist fire victims.
TWO families were left stranded after a fire broke out in two separate incidents, in Desai and Nagina, Mariannhill
In Desai, a two-room shack burned down on Saturday, 13 August. The fire destroyed everything, the family, a mother, father and a five-year-old girl were left with nothing.
Ward 13 councillor, Boy Cloete, said the family is currently residing with their neighbours and they do not know what caused the fire.
“They are still waiting for assistance from the Disaster Management department,” he said.
In another incident, a family of six escaped with only the clothes they were wearing on Wednesday, 23 August.
“According to the family, they saw smoke coming out of the children’s bedroom. They escaped with only the clothes on their backs.”
Cloete said they contacted the Disaster Management but they are aware that the family will not get any assistance from the municipality as this is a private residence.
“The family has three children aged between 10 and 16 who are still at school. We appeal to the community to assist the two families with donations of any kind,” said Cloete.
Anyone who would like to donate can contact Cloete on 073 272 9961.
