UPDATE: Alleged hijackers under police guard

The two men who were arrested earlier today will be charged with attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

THE two men who were arrested during a shootout with police this morning will be charged with attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

According to Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele, it is alleged members of the Provincial Task Team and Durban Dog Unit were chasing a hijacked vehicle with four men along the N3 Freeway towards Pinetown. “It is alleged the men started shooting at the police and the officers returned fire. The men crashed their vehicle into a civilian’s vehicle along Eden Road and the chase continued until Bradford Place in Pinetown where they crashed their vehicle again into the wall of a property,” said Capt Manqele.
Two men managed to escape on foot and two were arrested. “Two firearms including ammunition were recovered from the men. The arrested men were transported to hospital under police guard and they will also be charged for possession of a hijacked vehicle,” added Manqele.
The men aged 45 and 54 are expected to appear in court once they are released from hospital.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
