KLOOF and Highway SPCA is investigating a case of animal cruelty after a pitbull was found strangled to death.
According to Lisa Mörck, public relations and outreach officer at the Kloof and Highway SPCA, Inspector Petros Simamane was horrified when he responded to a late night call on Wednesday, 26 October.
He arrived at a property in Reservoir Hills and found a dead female pitbull that had strangled itself to death with its chain while trying to escape from the dismal area in which it was confined.

Mörck said the family had not noticed that the dog was dead until Petros knocked on their door.
“The owners of the pitbull have been charged in terms of the Animals Protection Act. The charges have not been finalised yet, but a decision will be made once statements are received from witnesses. These statements will strengthen the case of animal cruelty,” said Mörck.
She said while it is understandable that there may be situations where it is necessary to chain dogs temporarily, there are necessary precautions that should be taken.
“Animals should never be chained. If absolutely necessary and if for their own safety, the public must please contact their local SPCA for assistance,” said Mörck.
