Photography club captures 10 years of memories
The local club will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a photo exhibit at the Field's Shopping Centre this week.
TO mark its 10th anniversary, the Hillcrest Camera Club will host an exhibition of its members’ work at the Field’s Shopping Centre on Thursday, 24 November to Sunday, 27 November.
In 2006, a group of six photography enthusiasts got together and agreed there was a need for a camera club in the Highway area.
“At the time they were members of clubs in Durban and were looking to enjoy their hobby closer to home,” explained Vanessa Cracknell, the current chairman of the Hillcrest Camera Club.
The club was formed and, with just a handful of members, began by meeting once a month at the Hillcrest Sports Club which is still the club’s home.
During the years, the membership grew and today has about 90 paid-up members.
“We now meet twice a month and the club provides an excellent opportunity for photography enthusiasts of all ages and levels of experience to get together and share their love for photography,” said Vanessa.
The club meetings are divided between hosting guest speakers, practical workshops and photo-sharing evenings. Guest speakers are usually professional photographers who share their experiences in the industry and show examples of their work, which inspires the enthusiasts.
Another advantage of belonging to the club are the regular monthly outings. “We visit places that are of interest to photographers, and as a club we are sometimes given access to places that may otherwise be closed to the general public.”
Members of the club will be available for any questions visitors may have about the club and its activities. Contact Vanessa Cracknell on 076 091 9825, or visit the club’s website at www.hillcrestcameraclub.com.
