Keshav Maharaj: A Rising Star
A committed wholehearted performer with a calculating left arm, please meet Keshav:
On the morning of the 3rd of November 2016, not many cricketing fans would have guessed that on one of Australia’s most notorious fast wickets, a debuting spinner from KwaZulu-Natal would play a vital role in defeating the Aussie giants on their home turf. This dynamic and focussed star is none other than our very own Keshav Maharaj of the Hollywoodbets Dolphins.
A left-arm spinner hailing from Shaun Pollock’s alma-mater, Northwood Boys High, Keshav has emerged into the limelight at a time when South Africans have been stumped by the outstanding performance of our local spinners. To the astonishment of many in the cricketing establishment, from 2014 several South African spinners have been among the leading wicket-takers in our first-class competitions. Naturally, Keshav was among them in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons, and his hard work was rewarded with a call to play at the highest level.
According to Keshav, when South Africa took to the field to defend their first innings total at the WACA, Faf du Plessis and he had already discussed the battle plan for the day: Keshav would alternate with the pace bowlers, and aim to dry up the Australian run-rate. Despite a pitch that would offer him little assistance, this Hollywoodbets Dolphins star rose well above his Captain’s expectations and claimed 3 essential wickets.
Back at home, Keshav reflects that the Test reminded him that patience is the key to the success of a spinner. He notes, “Cricket is a test of character”.
As a rising star, Keshav is decidedly passionate about the next generation, and is eager to see young, aspiring spinners make their mark on the world. His message to our future stars? “Follow your dreams, and never give up”. The optimistic mentor avidly believes that triumph could always be around the next corner.
You can see our local hero perform his magic live at the Sahara Stadium Kingsmead. Remember that when our Hollywoodbets Dolphins take to the field, the atmosphere is always electrifying, so don’t miss out!
