Kloof man “lucky to be alive”
Home invaders got more than they bargained for when a father fought back to protect his family.

THE Kloof resident who was attacked by a knife-wielding robber said he was glad he had the strength to protect his wife and three daughters from harm.
He said he suffers from insomnia and on Tuesday night was playing Facebook games when he heard a noise. Thinking it was one of his children climbing out of bed, he went to check.
“I saw one of the men. He jumped up at me and stabbed me in the forehead with a kitchen knife. I was also stabbed in the arm,” said Alain Rijnvis.
As a professional dancer, he was quick on his feet, grabbed a chair and attacked the intruder. He knocked the knife from the man’s hand but said he grabbed another knife. “I felt like I had the power to over power this guy,” said Rijnvis.
He had the intruder pinned to the floor when he heard three loud bangs.
“I thought it was gunshots, but was his friend trying to smash through the shatterproof glass of a French door using the outside furniture. My wife was screaming out a window for help. My blood was dripping everywhere as you can imagine with stab wounds,” he said.
“My mind was calculating ways for me to get this guy out of the house. I knew that I needed to defend my home and my family,” said Rijnvis. He pushed the intruder through the damaged glass of the door. The men then fled the scene.
“The stab wound was so close to the main artery on my arm and the doctors said I was one of the luckiest guys ever as I could have bled out. I thank my lucky stars that I am still alive,” he concluded. Rijnvis went in for surgery and is in now in recovery.
