Candice bags gold at karate champs

Waterfall College’s Star of the Month- February 2017.

CANDICE Leslie’s exceptional performance at the recent KZN Karate Champs in Tongaat, has earned her the title of Waterfall College’s SPAR Star of the Month.

The Grade 11 learner achieved her personal best and bagged two gold medals. She competed in Kata (demonstration) and Kumite (fighting). She is the first female to win double gold at this level in Seiwakai, the karate organisation with which she trains.

This is the eighth year Candice has entered the KZN contest and it is her best result to date. It is also her 12th year of doing karate. Her next tournament is the SA National Karate Championships in March. Thereafter, she will represent South Africa in Romania in September at the Goju Ryu World Karate Championships.

Candice is also on the HOPE Committee, which is the outreach group at Waterfall College (Helping Other People Everywhere). On Valentine’s Day, she was one of four students who visited the Personal Care Centre at the Waterfall Gardens Retirement Centre with Valentine’s cards and custom-made biscuits.

Speaking about her visit, she said, “I can’t wait to go again. The patients were really happy to see us.”

Service outreach is one of the six pillars of achievement at Waterfall College and Candice is passionate about helping others. The talented lass plans on studying Sports Science at Stellenbosch after she matriculates.
