Car crashes into Ashley home wall

Mariannridge drive resident says erecting speed humps on the road will minimise the accidents.

AN Ashley family was fortunate to escape unharmed when a driver of a car hit an electricity pole on the road and drove through their concrete wall, into their yard in the early hours of the morning.

Nhlanhla Mdadane said it was about 3.50am on Monday, 12 September when they were woken up by a loud bang at his house in Mariannridge Drive.

Still shaken and confused by what was happening, Mdadane checked the surveillance cameras to see what happened.

“When we went out, my wife almost collapsed after she saw a double cab in our yard. The two men who were in the car managed to get out and were trying to help a woman who was still inside the car.

“We called the Fire Department, who then alerted police and paramedics about this incident,” he said.

According to Mdadane, there is a dangerous bend and motorists just speed and do not bother slow down.

“We have been appealing for speed humps as there have been two other incidents where drivers lost control and crashed into my neighbours’ fences and yards. If it was not for a tree on our premises, the car would have hit the house, killing someone, even the passengers were lucky to escape with minor injuries.

“This is a very busy road and it is a residential area. We have a shopping and a medical centre so there are many motorists who use this road,” he said.

Ward 16 councillor, Stanley ‘Shiphe’ Buthelezi, said he made a request to eThekwini Transport Authority for two things in Mariannridge Drive, a side walk for pedestrians and speed humps.

He said he also made a request for speed humps in Mkhize Road in Nazareth and Rudolf Road in Ashley as there are many incidents of people and children being hit by cars and cars going through people’s fences as well.

“In the other two roads, the speed humps have since been erected and there was an indication that they would also put up speed humps in Mariannridge Drive.”

He added that he would follow up with the department as there are other dangerous roads and intersections in his ward which need traffic calming speed humps.
