DSW workers ‘held hostage’ as EPWP workers go on strike

Workers are demanding full time employment.

REFUSE bags were left lying on the roads in Pinetown and surrounding areas after the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) strike this morning.

This comes after a strike by Durban workers last Friday.

The New Germany workers blocked off Koningkramer Avenue just up the New Germany Durban Solid Waste (DSW) depo and closed off the gate, preventing the DSW workers from getting out.

They also threw litter in the roads.

The EPWP workers said they will continue with their strike until their demands are met.

Among their grievances is for DSW to employ them permanently and pay them proper salaries not the ‘peanuts’ they said they are currently earning.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
