They began a strike in December last year and were promised their issues would be looked into, but three months have passed without an agreement being reached.
The group of disgruntled Checkers workers, mainly cashierss had plackcards with their grievances boldly displayed.
Some of the claims made by the workers were unfair working hours and they said they are not given notice of overtime work, but are informed while they are already at work, and it is not compensated.
Other complaints included no time allocated for a tea break. Workers that have worked for more than 10 years are still not registered as permanent staff and systems of discipline are threatening and bullying.
According to the Shoprite Group the majority of its employees returned to work on Friday, 30 March, after they experienced a two-day work stoppage on Wednesday 28 March and Thursday 29 March.
“The Shoprite Group remains committed to resolve matters through due processes with SACCAWU, the representative trade union, in the interest of all our employees as well as our customers,” said the Shoprite Group in a statement.
