Club collects food for needy

The food which is collected at supermarkets in Westville and Pinetown is then donated to the NPOs who help provide food or meals to people in need.

MEMBERS of Lions Clubs International have done food collections at supermarkets in the Westville and Pinetown area for many years.

Non-perishable food items are collected for donation to non-profit organisations who help provide food or meals to people in need.

The Cowies Hill Lions held a collection at Westville Mall in April, and the Westville Club collected at Westville Spar.

Lions Club of Cowies Hill secretary, Carol Browne, said the 2012 South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey estimated that 26 per cent of households in South Africa were ‘experiencing hunger’.

“A further 28.3 per cent were ‘at risk of hunger’ with only 45.6 per cent being described as having food security.

“The number of hungry people in South Africa has decreased in recent decades, however, the work done by organisations to assist in the alleviation of hunger of about 10 million people remains important,” said Browne.

Lions thanked the public for their generosity, and the mall management and supermarkets for giving them the opportunity to continue with these collections on a regular basis.
