John Wesley grows patches of hope
The veggies grown at John Wesley School in Pinetown will all be donated to Steve's Kitchen, a local non-profit organisation that feeds the poor.
THE learners at John Wesley School have planted a literal seed of change in the form of veggie gardens at their school.
The initiative was started by Bheki Kheswa, a maintenance worker at John Wesley, about three years ago and the project has since grown exponentially, taking up a large section at the back of the school property.
Sixteen learners gather at the veggie patch each Tuesday to help out in the garden, from watering and weeding to adding mulch into the patches.
They are currently growing lettuce, chillies, green peppers, spinach, carrots, brinjals, beetroot and radish.

Bheki said it will take about 100 days until the veggies are ready to be harvested and, once they are, they will be donated to local charity, Steve’s Kitchen.
“It’s all about teaching the children the value of sharing and then to see how happy a small donation such as this can make other people. It’s a great feeling. It is all about sharing and caring,” said Bheki.
Steve’s Kitchen is run by Christian Care from the Pinetown Methodist Church, receiving donations from various churches to feed between 75 to 103 people from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 9.30am.
