Flame Lily residents beat Werda learners in quiz game

When the Werda learners arrived and the quick-fire questions began, the residents left the youngsters in the shade with their sharp response time and amazing general knowledge.

FLAME Lily residents from the Assisted Living section of Flame Lily Park were treated to a visit by some Grade 9 and 11 learners from Werda Skool last week.

Kogie Padayachee, the social therapist for the home, said the residents enjoyed their weekly general knowledge quiz and having the youngsters join them was an extra special treat as they enjoyed the competition.

“We do this each week and it is always well received,” said Padayachee about the quiz which is held in the Frail Care lounge area.

Brenda Lavis, one of the residents said she was sure the youngsters would beat the residents easily.

“They are very clever these days,” she said. “I think they are likely to wipe the floor with us!”

However, when the learners arrived and the quick-fire questions began, the residents left the youngsters in the shade with their sharp response time and amazing general knowledge.

Topics ranged from public holidays and what they are commemorating, sports events, and even biology and chemistry.

The teacher accompanying the learners looked dismayed when her learners struggled with a question about what the acronym AIDS stood for, but the younger generation did redeem itself when one of the team members was able to sing the national anthem without pause, something few of the residents said they would have been able to do.

The end result was a win by a reasonably large margin by the elderly residents over the young visitors.

However, before tucking into cakes and juice, Padayachee extracted a promise from the learners that they would return for a rematch, which had the residents cheering.
