Time is running out for old SASSA cards

The SA Post Office is ready to pay a record number of 7 829 502 SASSA grants through the new gold SASSA card.

SOUTH Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) grants recipients who are still using old SASSA cards are reminded that these cards will expire on 30 December and SASSA will not deposit any payments for January on the old cards.

People still using the old white SASSA cards are urged to obtain the new gold SASSA card in order to receive their January social grants payments.

According to SASSA, there are approximately 600 000 SASSA beneficiaries nationally who have not yet switched to the new gold SASSA card.

“Getting the new gold SASSA card is simple. Visit any Post Office branch, present an identity document and you will be issued with the new card within minutes.”

“The new SASSA card can also be obtained from SASSA offices nationwide. Special arrangements are made for immobile beneficiaries who cannot visit a post office.  These beneficiaries (or their relatives) should call the SASSA toll-free number 0800 60 10 11 to arrange for a home visit.”

The SA Post Office also caters for beneficiaries who are not comfortable using a pin number.

These beneficiaries can present their ID document to make a withdrawal inside the Post Office branch using biometric authentication instead of a pin number to withdraw funds.

Cash payments for beneficiaries in outlying areas that do not have a Post Office will proceed according to the payment dates that were communicated by SASSA and Post Office officials to these communities during September.

The partnership between SAPO and SASSA has freed millions of social grants beneficiaries from unauthorised and unwanted deductions, as the new gold Sassa card does not allow any illegal deductions.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
