Shots fired as DA councillors intimidated in KwaNyuswa

Shots were fired and the roads were blockaded to ensure the DA councillors could not gain access to the area.

THE Democratic Alliance (DA) laid criminal charges against a rival political party as its members attacked and intimidated DA councillors and members while campaigning in KwaNyuswa’s Ward 2 on Wednesday.

“During the campaign, the councillors’ cars were blocked off and live rounds of ammunition were fired to scare them off,” said the DA KZN Premier Candidate, Zwakele Mncwango.

Coupled with laying criminal charges with the local police, Mncwango said the KZN MEC for Community Safety and Liaison, Hon Mxolisi Kaunda, and KZN Acting Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, were called on to intervene.

“This cannot be tolerated in a province that is still plagued with instances of political killings and instability. Such acts are criminal and need to be addressed as such. Acts of intimidation do not only undermine our young democracy, but spit in the faces of stalwarts, veterans and ordinary South Africans who fought tooth and nail to ensure such freedoms are lived and enjoyed freely,” said Mncwango

He noted that the DA would continue to campaign throughout KZN, and KwaNyuswa in particular.

The DA West Durban Constituency chairman, Marlaine Nair, expressed gratitude to the local police for responding promptly and assisting the councillors. “Our councillors are dedicated to assisting residents and making themselves visible and accessible to all. It’s sad that there are a few hooligans that are trying to prevent our councillors from doing their jobs,” said Nair.
