Watch: Music is the food of Melusi

Grade 12 learner, Melusi Gumede needs help to tour with the KZN choir in June.

MUSIC is a big part of Melusi Gumede’s family as it is a special talent he and his two siblings inherited from their mom.

“Although I can’t say the same about my dad, but he tries and sing bass from time to time, he is not so bad,” laughed Melusi.

Pinetown Boys’ matric learner, Melusi, is among the A team of the KZN choir that will travel to Croatia, Austria and Slovenia in June.

When he joined the choir in primary school, he did not take singing seriously but was told by the music teacher that there was something special about his voice.

In 2017, he auditioned for the annual Pinetown High School musical, “I was so nervous and doubted myself. I made it in but did not get a lead role.

“During that year I also tried my luck with the KZN choir with lots of encouragement from my older brother who has also been a member. I was shocked when I was called back and told I was going to be in the 2018 choir.

He said because of his dedication to his music, he has a 50 per cent scholarship. Last year, he received honours for choir and an award for being the Singer of the Year at the school’s annual prize-giving.

“There are lots of good things happening in my life because of my love for music. Last year I got the lead role in a musical. I love music and it is my passion, when I first started I did not expect it to grow into me. It has become a part of me.

Last year, Melusi was chosen as the schools SPAR Star of the Month after he was selected as the member of the KZN Youth touring choir where he competed at the World Choir Games in Tshwane in July.

He pleaded with businesses or individuals to sponsor him saying the tour will not only benefit him, but this is a chance for the choir to put South Africa on the map, “I really hope this dream comes true.”

The Grade 12 learner said he want to study law next year and do music part time. “Besides music, at home we love debating about controversial issues.”
