Locals get their hands dirty to remove dumped rubbish in Hillcrest

Hillcrest resident, Colin Stone and local businessman, Ryan James, took on the responsibility and cleaned up the area.

AFTER months of reports to the municipality of illegal dumping on Kassier Road in Hillcrest, nothing has been done about it, so resident, Colin Stone and local businessman, Ryan James, took on the responsibility and cleaned up the area.

Stone cycles through the area regularly and couldn’t help notice the piles of dirt and the stench emanating from the rubbish.

“Its been months that this rubbish has been here and I figured that if the municipality is not willing to do something about it, maybe local businesses can,” he said.

That’s when he decided to approach James who owns a skip company, Just Skip It.

James and his team took on the challenge and removed all the rubbish.

“I believe dumping is a huge issue in our area and the municipality is partially to blame as there are no dumping sites nearby so residents will do the cheapest and easiest thing which is to dump their rubbish at a nearby bush,” he said.

According to James, clearing the area and transporting the rubbish to a DSW landfill site will cost him close to R2 000.
